Appearance & origins

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass, typically jet-black in color, although it can have variations such as mahogany red (Mahogany Obsidian), rainbow iridescence (Rainbow Obsidian), or snowflake-like white inclusions (Snowflake Obsidian). Its surface is smooth and glassy to the touch, with a reflective sheen, and it often breaks into sharp, conchoidal fragments.

Obsidian is commonly found in regions with volcanic activity, such as Mexico, the United States (particularly in the western states like Oregon and Arizona), Iceland, and Japan.

Folklore & history

Obsidian has been revered across many cultures. The Aztecs and Mayans used it to craft weapons, mirrors, and ceremonial tools, believing it held the power of fire and earth. In some traditions, it was thought to be the tears of volcanic deities.

Ancient peoples used obsidian for making sharp tools, such as arrowheads and blades, due to its ability to fracture into razor-like edges. It was also used in spiritual rituals for scrying and protection.

Safety

Warnings: Obsidian is not toxic, but it should not be used in crystal elixirs prepared by direct infusion, as sharp fragments can be dangerous.

Care: Store obsidian separately from other crystals to avoid scratches, as its surface is brittle and prone to chipping. Handle polished pieces carefully to maintain their glossy finish.
