Appearance & origins
Saffron is a small, perennial flowering plant with purple petals, yellow stamens, and a distinctive red-orange stigma, which is the part harvested for use. The plant grows to about 20–30 cm tall, and its vibrant stigma threads are the source of the prized saffron spice.
Saffron is native to the Mediterranean, particularly Greece, but it has been cultivated for centuries in regions like Iran, India (especially Kashmir), and Spain. It thrives in arid and semi-arid climates.

Safety
Warnings: While saffron is safe in culinary amounts, consuming more than 5 grams at once can be toxic and may cause severe symptoms, including vomiting or even death in extreme cases.
Health note: Saffron should not be consumed in large amounts, as it may cause dizziness, nausea, or other adverse effects. Pregnant individuals should avoid saffron beyond ordinary culinary amounts, as it could potentially stimulate uterine contractions.
Storage: Store saffron threads in an airtight container away from light and moisture to preserve their potency and aroma.
