Appearance & origins

Elderberry is a deciduous shrub or small tree that grows up to 20 feet tall. It features dark green, serrated leaves arranged in opposite pairs. During late spring and early summer, it produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers. By late summer or early fall, these flowers give way to small, glossy, dark purple to black berries.

Elderberry is native to Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. It thrives in temperate regions and is commonly found in woodlands, hedgerows, and along riverbanks.
