Basil is a tender, leafy herb with bright green, oval-shaped leaves. The leaves are smooth with slightly serrated edges and emit a strong, sweet, and slightly peppery aroma when crushed. The plant grows to a height of 12-24 inches and produces small white or purple flowers at the top of its stems during its blooming phase.
Basil is native to tropical regions of central Africa and Southeast Asia. It thrives in warm climates and is now cultivated worldwide, particularly in Mediterranean countries, India, and parts of the Americas.
